Hi, I am 27 years old and finally realized that my symptoms are textbook! I knew something was going on with me, but I thought it was a hormonal thing until I realized I behave just like my 5 year old son that is showing symptoms of ADHD. I called my aunt who is a special ed teacher last week and she advised me to call my pcp. I got lucky! Called the doc this morning and they had me in by the early afternoon. I got my referral without a problem- HMO's suck when you're in a hurry! The intake specialist called me back and I have an appt for Jan.8. I just want to slow down and focus! How long will it take for the doctor to diagnose me and get medication prescribed?

It could take the first appointment, it could take a few. It varies according to whom you are, and most importantly, whom the doc is.
Medication may not be the only thing to solve the problem though--ask for other alternatives as well as the medication.
Best,
Clyde

I do not have a degree but am working on a masters in psychology...
My husband was diagnosed with ADHD- and still "seems that way" -the meds made him feel awful. I personally have ADHD and the meds make me tired and "normal", I don't feel them or crave them...they are addictive. Many people who are diagnosed ADHD may be bi-polar and the meds make them manic! They are wonderful if it is the correct diagnosis, I personally would note all my life history before my appointment, be honest, and ask for diagnostic testing. My husband wanted to "slow down and focus" also- it made him full of rage, moody, and mean. As for myself, I now sleep at night!!
Good Luck- I hope it works out- If it is ADHD the meds are truly a miracle! But I still have to make a conscious effort to work with my personal challenges, the meds just make it possible for me to make good choices.
