I have been dating this guy for 3 months. Into the second month his business was struggling and there were internal problems with his partner. He completely shut down for days and wouldn't go to the office or answer his phone. At first I thought he was immature, but not sure now. I have found out that he takes adderall for adult ADHD and have noticed that when he drinks with the medicine, if something very little upsets him it becomes a huge deal. So much so that he insists that I have done things to create these arguments when I am sure I haven't. These episodes have happened a few times and they are always identical where his mood changes instantly and he insists that I said something or did something. Even the next day if I try to discuss it he still insists it was me. It's like his perception of reality is off and if he gets to upset he will shut-down, sleeping a lot and refusing to make contact with anyone I don't think I want to see him anymore because of these episodes, but if he needs help I would like to try to help.

People with bipolar disorder have manic or hypomanic (below manic) episodes. Hypomania is characterized by "mild euphoria, a flood of ideas, endless energy, and a desire and drive for success." What you're describing sounds more like immaturity, sensitivity, and childlike behavior. Still, though, it's hard to diagnose people based on a 3rd party, one paragraph description.

I agree with Edahn. It does sound a little more like he is just grouchy about not getting his way.

Best,

Clyde
