I have a teenage son who was diagnosed with ADD and took the medication for almost four and 1/2 years and was very successful in the classroom. My son made on an average a 3.2 grade point and has decided to stop. He has found it difficulty to stay focus, but his father does not want him on the medication. What advice or suggestions can be made to help him in the classroom without the medication?

Hi,

have you spoke to your son's doctor about discontinuing the medication. There's alot of research to support the use of Omega3 Fatty Acid supplements for people with ADD. You can find it at any vitamin retailer and some grocery stores. You could also research other natural treatment available -but be cautous because there are many out there. It would be a good idea to stay away from any natural stimulants like caffeine.

Talk to his teacher and let him/her know what you're doing so they can keep an eye on him to make sure he's doing okay. Best of luck.

He needs to be back on the medication. Could you talk to the doctor and see if he could be on a different med?

Also, I like the idea of Bellas, letting the teachers know.

Best,

Clyde

A few months ago, I found the following website, discussing work that's been done at the U-Minn med school. It mapped to the info I had seen in Dr. Amen's books about the 6 types of ADD, where he mentioned 5-HTP and Tyrosine as treatments:

http://www.neuroassist.com/ADHD.htm

We found a Functional Medicine-trained provider who was open to this approach - she has helped us understand the biochemistry that wasn't working in my teen's brain, and was also astute enough to test for thyroid and nutrient deficiencies, as well as diagnosing an allergy to dairy foods.

This approach has been far more helpful than drugs, and though my teen is taking several supplements, the treatment is working.... it's been amazing...
