The other day I was on my computer and suddenly I heard a sound in my head, it sounded like a man's voice only I couldn't make out what he said or if it actually came from my head although it seemed like it.

Then I started getting scared I was hearing voices...

I started listening to my ipod and I went to listen to a song but then I second guessed it because for some reason certain music makes me more anxious. But then I said to myself "No, you can listen to it". I don't know if it was just me trying to push myself to overcome a simple form of anxiety or if I was possibly getting multiple personality disorder...or some form of schizophrenia.

Then I started thinking, "What if there's this second personality or voice coming out and it's trying to take over me?". The entire right side of my body feels different from the rest of me and sometimes it sounds as if whispering is coming from one side of my ear. Even when I walk the one side feels like it's walking different.

I'm so terrified that I'm coming down with some extreme mental disorder. I don't know if this is my anxiety playing tricks on me or what. I've also been seeing weird flashes/black floaty things in my vision. Again, I don't know if this is my body just beyond stress and messing with me.

I'm just reaching out to anyone who can ease my mind, and if this truly is anxiety, to help me let go of this fear.

Hi Lynne,

I noticed you recently posted another question seeking advice, I believe, about your son. When stress and worrying builds in one area of our lives, it often bleeds over into other areas. You're definitely going through SOMETHING, but when I read your post, it really sounds like what it is, is second-guessing yourself, rather than having a breakdown. That's really normal when life gets stressful.

I say that because I CONSTANTLY hear voices in my head. That's how people's minds work, in language, sounds, ideas. Your mind feeds you information and you choose what do with it. I would bet that if you honestly looked at your day, you'd find that you constantly hear sounds, voices, and ideas bubble up in your head. The difference is that you're familiar with it and not worried by it. In this case, you've become a little suspicious of that voice, but don't worry, it's the same as the voices or sounds you've heard all your life, you're just responding to it differently because, I would bet, there are other things in your life that are stressing you out. The right side of your body thing could be a manifestation of the stress as well.

So here's what I'd recommend:

1. Don't worry about the voice. Just remember that you're going through a stressful time now, that this is the same voice you hear all the time, but that it just seems unfamiliar for the time being. The voices can't harm you, and it's totally your choice to respond the best way possible. You don't have to worry, it'll pass.

2. Find out what's causing you stress in your life, besides this, and find a way to manage it. "Managing" doesn't mean you force it out, but you learn how to feel stress when it's healthy and respond wisely to it. You're basically just pacing yourself and staying on top of the situations that are provoking stress, making good, balanced decisions.

3. Find some very personal, soothing activities. For me, it's looking at calligraphy or listening to music with acoustic guitar. For you, maybe it's looking at old photo albums or writing in your journal. Surround yourself with beauty for a half hour a day. It's your personal time to be kind to yourself.

4. In 2 weeks, see how you feel. If the stress hasn't been managed and you still feel overwhelmed, contact us or contact a friend, or contact a psychotherapist or psychiatrist and seek their opinion. Again, that doesn't mean you're crazy. A good therapist will probably offer you some stress-reduction techniques before diagnosing you with anything. If your right side of your body still feels off, seeing a doctor might help, too.

Remember, everything's okay! Just take it step by step and you'll be fine.

Sincerely,

Edahn

Hi Lynne, I think Edahn's post contains some good wisdom for you! I also feel that you are going through a stressful time and experiencing a lot of anxiety right now and this is how your body is reacting to it, and by finding ways to reduce this, your symptoms may also fade away. I read this post more than once, and NO, doesn't sound like psychosis or anything of the sort to me; rather it seems like symptoms of really high levels of anxiety, which I can relate to. I'm a very "internally verbal" person too, and have a lot of what you could call "internal dialogue" with myself; It's a way of processing my thoughts. Yes, I would reccomend seeking a health professional; it can reassure you and also see if there's anything else medical going on, like with your vision, etc. Do you find that you have a Lot of muscle tension in your body? That may explain the feeling of the right side not walking the same, etc. Hope you will be able to begin to relax very soon.

It sounds like anxiety to me too. I like what both previous posters have said.

You can see a health professional, to make sure.

Hope you can relax again soon.

Best,

Clyde
