So. I'm 13 years old. And I've noticed that I keep holding on to people. I literally have to. I always hold on to my mom's arm or hold my brother's hand whenever we go out. At school, I always have these sudden/random urges to grab whoever's next to me. And I can't not do it, or I feel bad...I get these panic thoughts in my mind...is there a word for this??

Hi
is that the only thing you feel your "have to" do?
often this can be a sign of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
there is also something called Separation Anxiety, but that is usually more related to family, close friends, loved ones. Has someone close to your left, or died? or even a pet?
No, I haven't told my mom because i know she will just laugh at me and ignore my question by not answering it. and yes, i do feel like i HAVE to do it...it really confuses me x( no, i don't think anyone has left or died...

that feeling of "have to" is often how people with OCD describe things...along with the feeling that they fear something bad will happen if they dont do it and that they have to do it "just right"
if that sounds like how you feel, that may be what is causing this
maybe try talking to your mom if this is bothering you and ask her if you can see the doctor.
many people manage just fine with their OCD, especially once they know what it is. But some people are so bothered by it that they need medication and/or therapy to help them cope with it better
if you dont think your mom will pay attention, can you talk to your dad? another relative or close adult friend? school counselor?
the counselor already thinks i'm messed up. i know, because i used to cut myself last year (i don't do it anymore though...) and my friend told one of my teachers, who told the counselor, and the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade counselors were all there (i'm in 8th grade now) T_T

you really should discuss things with your counselor if you feel comfortable doing so.
OCD isnt just washing hands a lot or being a neat freak...it can involve self injury, intrusive thoughts, irrational behavior and many other things
I am not saying that is what you have, but just mentioning it as a possibility...you really should ask to be able to see a psychologist so you can explain all these things and be properly diagnosed. With correct diagnosis comes potentially helpful treatment

It could definitely be OCD, but of course, like everyone else said, until you seek professional help (or even tell your Mom) you will never know for sure.
Psych Central Answers is a place where people can ask and answer questions about mental health issues and relationships in a safe and supportive environment.
