Over the last 10-15 years (I'm 33), I have had several episodes of depression with suicidal thoughts, though I thought for a long time that this was the result of my despair at not being able to get past a severe anxiety disorder (phobia/panic problems). I have also had hypomanic episodes, but this has always been when I have been on SSRIs, and frequently when drinking regularly. Might I be bipolar II? Does hypomania 'count' if it chiefly and most strongly occurs when one is on SSRIs? i am currently on SSRIs for depression, but feel restless and unable to concentrate - a mixed state? Any advice would be appreciated.

Marie, I'm not a medical doctor and can't really answer those questions. Are you always taking the same SSRI or is this occurring on any of them you've tried? It could very well be a side effect of the med, though.
I think seeing a therapist who could monitor your emotional state over time would not only help answer these questions, but help you with that out of control anxiety. Of course, whomever is prescribing the SSRI should know how you are feeling and discuss it with you (as to whether it's an unwelcomed side effect.)
Good wishes

I would definitely seek a therapist who could help you with these issues.
It can be SSRI's, the hypomaniac episodes you mention, or a host of other ailments and issues, but I would seek an MD or T's help firstly.
