bpg is right. Bipolar isn't contagious.

Just to emphasize what the other posters wrote --

Mental illness -- of any kind -- is not contagious. You can't "catch" it from another person, by just being in proximity to them or living with them or touching them.

There are many things to be concerned about when your child is in a relationship with someone with mental illness... mostly is it a healthy relationship for both of them, and can they cope with the challenges that it brings to their relationship - but 'can they catch it' is NOT one of them. Mental illnesses and emotional problems are not caused by germs. The only way he could 'catch' an emotional problem was if he was already dealing with his own emotional baggage and they fed off each others illness. Being with someone who is mentally ill is not going to make you get sick.

Mental illness is not contagious. The only way he could get it was if he had it to begin with.

Best,

You know, I just have to be completely honest here. I had a friend who, I'm pretty sure was bipolar or manic depressive or whatever. Low and behold, I definitely have the same problem today as she had then (lasted about 5 years) while, hers is gone. Bipolar or related illnesses are definitely "contagious" contrary to the crap you are fed by those unaffected directly or otherwise! BEWARE!!
