My boyfriend is severely bipolar, and has a history of depression. He has made one serious suicide attempt but many threats. He decided to stop taking his meds for bipolar disorder because of how it made him feel, and it's really been stressful. It's like he's two different people, even when he was on the medication. His out look on life changes back and forth, his annoyances, and how he treats me. Sometimes he's really open minded, other times he's completely narrow. Last night he sent me a text apologizing for not telling me that he had multiple personalities. I'm not sure if he's been tested or if he is just guessing, but it makes sense. Kind of. I'm just not sure. Could he have multiple personalites?

I am going to start out by saying I am not a psychologist, just a psychology major. That being said Multiple Personality Disorder is normally defined when a person has "black outs" where they dont remember what happened when an alternate personality takes control. Now, bipolar disorder can lead someone to think they are dealing with more than one person because the patient experiences sever mood changes. Although it is not uncommon for suffers of Bipolar Disorder to go off their meds when they are in an elevated state, it is VERY important he go back on his medication. Yes, it does make people feel like zombies, but it is dangerous for him to be off of it. If you are a girlfriend of a long time, i would suggest reaching a family member and possibly considor inpatient care, i am sure the last thing you would want is him to experiance a "down" mood and attempt suicide. Bottom line, get him to a proffesional.

One of the key features of MPD is that only one personality is aware of the others. The subordinate personalities aren't aware of each other's existence.

It sounds like he's moody. That's kinda what happens.

It sounds like to me that he should just take the medication again, and things would be better. It sounds like that is a huge problem.

Meds dont always make people feel like zombies, sometimes yes, but there are different options and opinions. Just because a doctor puts you on one med, that doesnt mean you are stuck on it for your whole life.

Best,

Clyde
