I'm trying to find the courage to seek counseling but I'm afraid no one will take me seriously because of the over the counter drug abuse. I'm also afraid they will see the self injury of my hand (punching broken glass) and that along with the drug use, decide to put me on a 72 hour hold. I have thought for a long time that I have some type of Bipolar, but I have read that most people who think they have it, don't. I've had my issues ever since I was 14, the Benadryl abuse didn't start until a few years ago. Will they dismiss all my symptoms to the drug abuse?

Hi,

I think that you should definately seek counseling for this problem. Almost all drug abusers have under lying emotional problems. Don't feel embarassed. You should go to your family doctor and find a good counselor. They will take you seriously and you should tell them everything you've been doing and feeling. They only put people on 72hr. hold when someone is admitted to the hospital for a suicide attempt.

Over the counter drug abuse is a very common problem so don't be embarrassed about it. You really need to fix it because you don't want to end up causing yourself liver damage. You also need to come clean about the self injury -don't worry they'll help you. You need to discover why you are self medicating -you are trying to cover up some psychological pain. You're injuring yourself because you want to block your pain. Please get the help you need.

To answer your main question: Yes, you will be taken seriously and yes, they will want to help you. There is no need to feel embarrassed or that its a "low importance" problem - What should happen is that your drug abuse situation will be handled first then an assessment can be made for any other underlying problems. Normally, as stated by the other person, drug abuse problems come about because of something else. It may not be bipolar, but if its there, it can be pinpointed.

Good luck and God bless,

Cris

You will be taken seriously, yes. And if you don't expect the help, which of course, you would receive, they may or may not notice the Benadryl, and the hand.

But dont you think its time to come out of hiding and get to feeling well again?

Best,

Clyde
