Example. At dinner someone keep criticizing my son. Then the started on me. The subject was that my son and I believe in helping people. Criticized for doing so even if it causes us some discomfort. Before my breakdown, I did not have these feelings of being overwhelmed. In the above situation, I had to leave the table because I couldn't handle the situation. Is this normal

Hi there:
Yes it is normal for you to feel overwhelmed when questioned and criticized. Especially since you have the Major Depressive Disorder.
Do you still see a therapist about it?
You were overstressed before the breakdown, and now, hopefully, you are learning better how to deal with stressors and anxiety.
If you are not seeing a therapist presently, I would recommend it, just to be able for you to help get your feelings of anxiety and stress out.
Best,
Clyde

herhowell, this is absolutely normal for someone who is suffering as you are. Depression makes it intolerable to hear any more bad news, especially when they are felt as though the information is attacking himself.
I agree that you need to seek counseling to help you begin to rebuild your self respect and learn how to handle stressors that are now spiraling you downward farther into depression.
