Hey ponycare,

First up I don't know about your chances of getting disability that is something that I don't have any knowledge about. But the other symptoms you describe are very common in someone who has major depression. Have you been having treatment for your condition?, are you seeing a therapist who is trying a number of different skills based therapies with you?. If not I think you should. It takes a while to find the right therapist and or the right therapy.

Major depression is treatable but sometimes can re-occur and you can relapse. But there are many things you can do to support your mood. The catch 22 of depression is that you need to take action to get better, but that's the last thing you feel like doing when your depressed. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy have all proven very good in the treatment of major depression. See if you can find a therapist who practices these forms of therapy.

Start small and stay focused

The key to depression recovery is to start with a few small goals and slowly build from there. Draw upon whatever resources you have. You may not have much energy, but you probably have enough to take a short walk around the block or pick up the phone to call a loved one. Eat a piece of chocolate, have a warm bath, massage, feel the rays of sun on your skin, being in nature is a real mood lifter. Even watching it on a computer screen can help.

Take things day by day and reward yourself for each accomplishment. The steps may seem small, but if you make time for them each day, they’ll quickly add up. And for all the energy you put in to your depression recovery, you’ll get back much more in return.

Here is a website about depression with signs symptoms, treatment and self help tips. It's really good so I suggest you give it a read.

I wish you well.

Great post Fpsy :)

In addition I would recommend marriage counselling in combination for treatment for depression. It's very important to ASAP treat your sleep problem. Lack of sleep can exacerbate depression and affect all areas of a persons life - it can also make you very forgetful and have trouble concentrating which is why you're having work problems.

Make sure you keep regular sleeping hours, meaning go to bed and wake up at the same time every day and limit caffeine intake. I think your wifes affair may be at the root of this, so if you get counselling, take the advice for depression Fpsy gave you and start sleeping better then you'll start to feel better. Best of luck in healing.

Probably little if none for social security disability.

You do need to do what they both said in the post. Find ways to treat yourself better. You really also need to try and see a therapist to get through all of this.

Best,

Clyde
