So, I was wondering about depression "replaspe" when I was 12, I noticed I was sad, by the time I was thirteen, it had worsened twice as bad. When I was fourteen, I had already attempted suicide. Well, the attempt at suicide was in December of 06, and then in February, they put me on WellButrin. It took awhile to work, but then it did wonders, and in November of 07, I got to go off. I have been fine ever since. (I'm 16 now) Well, I am wondering if depression can be caused by stress, can stress really do something to our brain?(I was under a LOT of stress then) And because I have already had it, can it come back later in life for me? ALSO, alcoholism runs in my family, is there a genetic link between depression and alcoholism?

Well, depression can be comorbid with alcoholism--meaning that it is possible that a person can be depressed and drink a lot.

Depression can be caused partially by stress, but not entirely.

I hope you continue to feel well.

because I've already had it though, and so young, what are the odds of it potentally coming back later on in life? I want to know because if it can come back, I know which meds worked.

Yes,

It can come back. However, that is part of the equation. By learning better ways to deal with our stressors and bad habits, we can learn how to deal with depression.

Hi Kim!

Poor responses to stress can result in depression. Feeling out of control, frustrated, as a teenager often is, can be depressing. I think with the raging hormones in a teen, there can be all sorts of reactions, you know?

I would suggest that you work on good self care. Proper thinking and handling of stress will help prevent diving down into that dark pit again. Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or ACT Acceptance Commitment Therapy, can help you keep from having poor thinking response to things that occur in life. Learning to counter any distortions in thinking/reacting will help you keep good mental health.
