I am a 19 year old female currently working her way through community college.
I've been noticing I haven't been feeling myself lately. This is something I only started to notice within the past month but now I think on it; it's been like this for about half a year.
During high school I spent most of my time reading and writing when I wasn't practicing my music for marching band or just hanging out with my friends. It was something I used both for pleasure and to release stress and I find I'm no longer able to read anything longer than a quick blog post and writing; forget about it. This has to the be only thing I've written in months.
Even small things like playing video games I find I'm no longer able to enjoy; I've been waiting for games to come out for years and would normally blow through them in a day and now...I just can't play them. When I think about them I still REALLY want to play the but...I don't know. I just can't.
As I mentioned before I'm in college and I'm studying...but I feel like it's not even worth it. Like, even if I get A's I still won't have a future.
I blow all my money I make from my job at Burger King. All of it. My account only has 100 dollars in it and I've made at least 6,000 this year.
Sometimes I feel so terrible I wish it would all just stop. It's not like I want to die I just want the pain to go away. I want to be myself again. I don't want to feel this way anymore.
I'm embarrassed to tell anyone about this; after all, everyone feels sad from time to time. I don't want anyone to think I'm just looking for some attention.
I especially don't want to talk to my parents about it. We're going through hard times; my dad has been arrested twice for drunk driving and does not have a job; nor is he able to drive. My mother works 6 days a week as a waitress; she is our main source of income.
As far as I know there is no one at the school for students to talk to unless it's a question about credits, transfers or majors. School related things.

I think you may be depressed....not just 'sad' as you mentioned. Considering what's going on at home, I really wouldn't doubt that you are, everything you listed above are signs of depression. It's sad that you don't have anyone to talk to in school, because I think you should see a therapist. Maybe you should look into that, if not at school, am sure you can find one outside. If you can't afford it, ask around as to where you can get the service free, or maybe you can spend some of the money you blow to pay for one.
I also don't understand why you blow all of your money if your family are facing hard times, anyway, thats between you and them.
Best of luck, don't give up. Judging from the fact that you haven't mentioned that you think ur depressed, I would assume that you are not familiar with depression. As such, you probably would not understand that the way you feel is not your fault, and you shouldn't give up. Just find help and ride it out it.
I think the fact that ur putting urself through school says a lot about your character, so ur obviously not stupid.
Just hang in there and try to find help!
All the best!

Hi
so sorry to hear you are going thru all this
so many different things can contribute to feelings of depression that it really would be a good idea to see a doctor to be sure all is ok physically, and then maybe get a referral to a psychologist. Most colleges have student clinics so hopefully yours does too. Very often something physical like hormones out of balance or even latent infections etc can really mess with our emotions.
I hope you will be able to overcome the feeling of embarrassment to talk to someone...getting attention for a medical or psychological problem is a good thing!!
Do you think your dad's drinking and being unemployed is contributing to how you feel?
Do you help your mom by contributing some of your income for the household expenses? Doing that would be good, and would also maybe help you be more responsible with your earnings.
Also, do you get enough carbs in your diet? It has been noted that sometimes very low carb diets can contribute to depression etc. Some people also find that excessive consumption of diet sodas containing aspartame (nutrasweet) can mess with their neurological system
those are just some of my thoughts on this
sure hope you will try to see a doctor asap to get you feeling better soon!

Hi,
I am sorry to hear you are feeling bad too.
To me, it sounds a lot like depression. I think a lot of it too involves you leaving high school and going to community college. You may feel like you have little or no time for fun or to be socially involved with others.
There probably is some one at the school who can help. Ask your teachers or one of those office people who can help with the credits (people such as the registrar, etc) for whom to speak too.
Psych Central Answers is a place where people can ask and answer questions about mental health issues and relationships in a safe and supportive environment.
