Is it normal to have difficulties going to sleep? Even when I'm tired, I have to lie there for a while before I can actually sleep. Just the other night I was lieing in bed for at least half an hour before i could sleep. After I fall asleep though, I sleep soundly. But I tend to sleep 10-12 hours most of the time. Is this normal for most people?

For me, sometimes that does happen. I get really tired some days and find it hard to sleep right away.

Things that do help me is to read a book before I go to bed, and to sometimes watch some television as well.

I am sure there are other options too, such as drinking warm milk, etc.

The 10-12 hours is a little above normal...usually, the average is around 6-8 hours a night (or rest time).

Do you feel the need to sleep that much? Are there any other issues that may make you want to sleep that much, or is it normal for you?

Best,

Clyde

it's pretty much normal, but i just really like to sleep. but to the options you suggested about TV, or reading a book don't really help much. i've tried listening to some classical music too, but it doesn't really help me. ^_^;

So are there any issues that help keep you awake at night?

not particularly, but it seems like i think a whole lot while im just lying there keeping me from sleep. i may think about anything. life, school, story ideas, people, etc... and i also find sleeping on my stomach to be the easiest. ^_^; i know that's not the best position to sleep in, but...yeah.

It's the same way with me. I have to lie in bed for over an hour before i get to sleep. Sometimes, i drink a glass of warm milk or a cup of herbal tea before hitting the sack.(I like herbal tea, but it may or may not appeal to you as much as it does to me. There are different teas, some made specifically for helping you sleep. If you're a tea person, you might try it sometime, add a little honey, because sugar's not the greatest thing at night). Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. There are also herbal supplements that you can buy; they're not sleeping pills, rather, they're all-natural, and they can be very helpful (My mom and I use a supplement called "Sleep Like a Baby"). You can also try to invest in a sound machine; it makes different sounds (hence the name ^_^) from nature, such as the ocean, or rain, etc. For some people, nature sounds can be more irritating than relaxing, but I find it pretty helpful. Just some suggestions that i hope will help. ^_^

Recently the "experts" disclosed that we are not sleeping enough for good health. Younger people need 11 to 12 hours a night, and older need 7-8 hours.

Having an active mind is probably one of the most common reasons for staying awake. Developing a sleep routine will help. Turn off radio and tv an hour before bed time, drink a hot liquid, take a shower, meditate, stretch, adjust the bed pillows, things like that during the hour help your mind/body realize that it will soon be time to sleep.

Thought-stopping can help to fall asleep, but if you find thoughts continuing to intrude, try keeping a journal or writing down in a list all those things that you need to think about "tomorrow." That will alleviate your mind from ruminating them for fear you will forget. Reminding yourself that there is nothing you can do about any of them "right now" might also help.

All in all, I think most people do take about 30 minutes to fall asleep. I hope your time is more easily enjoyed now. TC
