Hello. The issue that I am having is that when I look into a mirror it looks like my face is too small compared to my body, but when I take pictures of myself or shoot a video of myself my face doesn't look as small, it actually looks slightly bigger I guess. I don't understand it, I just hate putting clothes on and then seeing myself in the mirror because the mirror makes me look like I have a small short face. I'm about 5'6 or 5'7 140 pounds. I started to lift weights when I was younger, I don't know if my body size is possibly making my face look smaller or what. My chest(pecs) are I guess pretty big and my arms and biceps are a lot bigger than they used to be, plus I guess I may have gained some weight also. I don't know if it is the mirror, my body, or what though. It just looks wierd when I view myself in mirrors, it almost looks like someone took a small head and stuck onto a body that doesn't match the head. I mean its not really really bad or anything, but it is pretty noticable I guess, I can't help to stare everytime I look in the mirror.

Hi Jack,

does this happen in all mirrors because if it's one mirror - sometimes mirrors get warped. I guess it's possible if someone becomes very muscular, they might seem unproportionate. Since you said you look fine in pictures, then don't worry.

There is a disorder called Body Dysmorphic Disorder - this is when a person becomes very fixated/obsessed with a perceived defect. Since you say you don't think it's really bothering you then you should be okay.

Well, I know this may sound kind of dumb, but some days I think my face looks ok, and then other days it just looks smaller. I don't see why a face would change sizes and I doubt it is. Maybe its just all in my head, but I don't know when I was younger one of my friends said that I have a small face, and I was kind of like huh? I've pretty much been fixated on it ever since. The mirror I look at everyday is just a regular mirror, or at least it appears to be, my closet has slide doors and the doors have mirrors on them. Thats what I am looking at myself with. It is a full body mirror. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I wish my face was a little bit longer or bigger, I wish I could do something about it.

Also, it seems like when I was younger my face was bigger, of course I am not fully 100% sure on this, but it just seems like my face was bigger when I was younger. Is it possible that faces get more defined and smaller(shorter) as someone gets older? I know that wouldn't make any sense, but it's just a question I guess. I do run a lot and used to lift weights, would any of that decrease a face size? I know its probably a dumb question.

When you say you have a small short face - is it short from the nose to the chin - meaning is your chin recessed. If a persons chin is recessed, usually their teeth need braces and there's a common jaw surgery where, the lower jaw is brought forward slightly - this lengthens the face from the nose down and the profile looks better. Anyway I don't know if you have this problem.

As we get older, we do lose volume in the face - cheeks, around the eyes etc. Maybe a change in hair style would help. Often we're more aware of our own flaws and other people really don't notice.

I'm not really sure, I don't think my chin is recessed, it just looks small all together I guess. That sucks that we lose volume in the face as we get older, I didn't know that. I know other people may not notice it as much because they are seeing me in real life and I am looking at myself in the mirror, but it just sucks sometimes. I shaved my face a little bit and that helped already, which is good, maybe I need to keep it that way instead of having so much facial hair. As far as my hair style I have short hair already which will make my face look bigger because long hair would just cover it up more. As far as a hair style, I usually just have my hair short without any gel in it, but I have a widow's peak and I have curly hair so it is really hard to spike my hair up in the front, or else I would do that, because that would surely make my face look longer, but it just looks stupid I don't have the right hair type to do that, I wish I had naturally straight hair instead of naturally curly hair like my mom does, but oh well I guess I can deal with it, its not horrific or anything lol. Thanks for your help.

I agree not having a beard will make your face stand out more. If you look good in a mustache, I was thinking you should grow a gotee - but not too full from the bottom lip to your chin....just a bit on the chin and a narrow line down the side from the upper lip.

Bottom line I don't think prospective partners will be thinking you have a small face. I don't think this is worrying you enough to be considered a problem. The narrow gotee will elongate your face though. Good luck :)

Hi Jack I m facing the same problem just like u. In most the mirrors my face looks very small compared to my body though i m a short in height. I hate to face myself in the mirror. But in some mirrors i look just normal.

In fact in those mirrors my face looks bigger than i think i have. But becoz of this problem i hate to try any dress in trial rooms or in fact whenever someone is there i try to move away from the mirror. Even i hate to go to the parlours. But when i was around 11-12 yrs of age i think my face used to look bigger or normal in every mirror. I m loosing so much confidence becoz of this and dont know what to do. But just like u my pics come normal.
