Hi mustang,

It's not unusual for people to have intrusive thoughts that are strange or weird. They happen automatically and can sometimes contain disturbing or even violent imagery.

I would say if they are happening a lot and interfering with your life, and you find yourself engaging in rituals to ensure that they don't happen again, then these could be related to an anxiety disorder in the form of obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD.

The best thing to do is not to worry about it, try to ignore them. The more your focus and worry on them the worse they get. The difference between people who have OCD and people who don't, who have intrusive thoughts is that people who don't have OCD tend to let the thoughts come and go, shrug their shoulders and say to themselves wow that was a bit weird. They don't tend to worry or obsess over them too much.

Try practicing this, when you have them, just say oh wow that was weird. Don't fantasize or dream or let the thoughts take you away. Don't elaborate on them. When they come into your mind, just shrug it off and keep doing whatever it is that your doing.

If however, you have begun to engage in rituals, like counting or washing your hands or other kinds of behaviors to ward off the intrusive thoughts then I think you need to speak to your parents, and get them to take you to the doctor to get a referral to see a specialist in the treatment of OCD.

Hope that helps

Do you feel depressed at all? Do you get very happy one minute, then very sad the next?

Do you engage in any kind of counting, hand washing, repetitive actions--that kind of thing?

I would definitely recommend that you see a therapist and let them know about how you are feeling and what is going on.

Best,

Clyde
