I am only 17 years old, but I do not live with my parents. I've told my parents multiple times throughout my life that I think something is wrong with me. in the last 2 years, I have experianced extreme problems. I see things that aren't there, I hear things that noone else does, I am very paranoid, and there I have urges to do things that I don't want to do. I want to seek out a psychiatrist, but I don't think any would take me because I'm underage. I don't want to bring it up with my mom. Only my boyfriend knows about these symptoms. This is becoming worse over time. I think it's very important that I get treated for it. what can i do?

Hello, do you have a family doctor you can see who can hopefully refer you? Any other responsible adult who can assist you in finding the correct physician to help you? I realize you dont want to discuss this with your mother, but you may well have to get a letter of consent from her if that is what is required.

It really isnt something you want to leave untreated if it is seriously impacting your life.

hope you find the help you are looking for

Dear Gen14laree,

I can certainly understand why you are concerned about these things happening to you. And you are right, it is difficult for you to get in to see a doctor while a minor. The only other possibility that I can think of is (and you probably aren't going to like this one) you could contact Child Protective Services and talk to a Social Worker and explain your situation and that you don't want your mother involved in this situation but you are afraid for your safety. It's just a suggestion. Are you not living with your parents because you are supporting yourself, or because you are living with your boyfriend, or exactly what is the situation? Is your father in the picture? If so, would he be a better possibility? It's hard to give you advice when the information you have provided is a little sketchy. Also, the laws vary from state to state.

I do believe you when you say that this is very scarey. I know that it is and not to be the bearer of bad news but it is probably not going to get better without medication. Would it be really, really bad if you asked your mother for help? I am concerned for your safety. There could be several illnesses that you have which all have hallucinations as a symptom.

Please think over your options and realize that you may need to choose to do something even if it means going a route you would rather not go at this moment. You really do need to be evaluated by a psychiatrist.

I wish you the best of luck.

my mom lives in mississippi and I live in louisiana. I live with my boyfriend and his grandparents. I have a child with him. I'm afraid if I tell anyone they will think I'm crazy.

You could talk to a school guidance counselor, or perhaps a community counselor (such as a church counselor or social services worker). Or, a general practitioner. Did you "divorce" your parents? Or are the boyfriend's parents your legal guardian? Perhaps they could help in this.

Or..

If you've "told [your] parents multiple times throughout my life that [you] think something is wrong with [you].".... then she already knows that help would do you good. Why not ask?

Could his grandparents help you?

You do need to either talk to a school guidance counselor, a counselor or a therapist. Seriously.

Do it now!

Best,

Clyde
