I have a friend who is hitting his head with his fists--not too much, but probably 3-5 times period in his whole life time. The episodes probably have happened mostly in the last 6-7 months. He hits his head over and over about 6 times, 3 times each fist, but he says it isn't that hard, just enough to bounce off his head.
Could it be possible that he is just hitting his head with his fists just out of habit, not as a head banging issue?

It may be possible it is a habit, but I think it may be more likely he has a head banging problem. Since you've obviously tried talking to him about it, and he just tells you it's not hard, why don't you see if you can get him into counselling? He probably won't want to go, but it's worth a shot. It is possible, though, that it is just a habit, in which case, you wouldn't want to jump to a conclusion. But head banging is also a sign of self-injury, so you may want to sit down and talk to him about it.
Best of luck,

Thanks Leanne...
I forgot to mention he does see a counselor already. I may talk to him to see if he will talk to his therapist about it if I see him pretty soon--or may email him :)
Thanks!

I sometimes get just so completely frustrated with my job, that I'll find myself either punching the counter top when nobody is looking of course, or banging my head on the wall.
I know that for me, it's just that everything is circulating through my mind..all of the pressures of work, and all of the stupid rules..and at the moment, that becomes a quick way to release my anger.
I notice that it subsides when my friend very adorably
says with a bit of a sarcastic tone; "So...you're hitting your own head...when you should be hitting theirs instead."
She smiles, and it makes me laugh. Then I stop.
I sometimes think it's just a habit I need to break.
Maybe find a subtle way to bring it to his attention, without hurting his pride. Just in case he's not aware.
